Choosing the best fitness tracker to improve your health

Over the next few blog posts, I will be sharing fitness trackers that offer accuracy and versatility that will be accepted for use in Train and Flourish programs as of 2017.

There is are several options on the market, and the amount of variations in the offerings can be overwhelming which is why I am sorting through and blogging on some of the best trackers out there.

The first and most accurate will almost always be a traditional chest strap. This offers the most accurate reading of heart rate. However, it’s also slightly awkward to put on and most people would not wear it during sleep to track resting heart rate. So while I will list approved chest straps as an affordable and accurate option, I’m primarily going to focus on wearables that you can wear on your wrist.

Keep in mind that I’m after accurate readings as well as being easy to use and export or share this data and information.These are not listed in order of my preference, just as individual options to consider with an additional review link attached for more information and specs.

First Up: Fitbit Surge

There are a ton of Fitbits on the market, and they have made a name for themselves, though many people I know opted for the more affordable and slimmer Charge HR and though they have come out with the Charge2 HR this year, the durability was sorely lacking for most owners that I know of. The other complaint is the lack of ability to track GPS and Heart Rate displays at the same time. Although more expensive, I personally opted for the Surge a year ago and am still extremely happy with the durability and the accuracy. The option to set the tracker for a free run with onboard GPS means that I can track my pace, average pace, heart rate, clock, and distance all by swiping the bottom of the screen. After my run I can sync to my phone app and look at the miles split for pace and heart rate.

The heart rate monitoring accuracy does create a larger margin of error during high intensity interval training, but this is true of any HRM tracking device, a chest strap may decrease these margins slightly but once a baseline is determined you can work with it, I’ve cross referenced my Surge tracking on 3 other machines/trackers and it’s been within 3-5 bpm.

For all of its features and accuracy, the Fitbit Surge is a prime pick, plus it’s easy to share data with friends on Fitbit or screenshot the apps data and email it to me for easy tracking.
